About Us

Given the serious environmental deterioration that Mexico City (CDMX) is experiencing, because of the demographic explosion in the eighties, we explored the feasibility of being able to cover 40% of the roofs of CDMX with vegetation, we did not know the benefits that could be achieve for the environment and for the city by greening our cities. There were doubts about the technical and economic feasibility, we imagined an ideal world where anyone could install their green roof or urban garden easily and safely, capturing part of the rainwater and using it for green roofs, recycling waste and reusing it for creation of these green areas, the challenge would be to know what plants and vegetables could survive on these roofs with only six irrigations a year.

Given all these thoughts and questions, we developed a modular system for green roofs called "Ecomacetas" (Eco-pots), which made it possible and feasible to achieve the enormous challenge of creating green spaces on an urban scale and contributing significantly to regenerating the ecosystem even in CDMX.

In 2006, Efecto VerdeTM AC was born, the first Civil Association in Mexico focused on green roofs, converting recyclable industrial waste into an Eco-pots with a tax-deductible scheme for the creation of green spaces and environmental education. We work in collaboration with various educational institutions, civil associations, research institutes and agricultural producers in the *“chinampera” zone of Xochimilco, so that green roofs can become a reality we actively participate in the creation of the Greening Naturation standard for CDMX.

Over the years, looking for a business model to market and implement green roofs using our Eco-pots at a national level, we launched our company and brand Verde Modular™, a brand by which our clients know and identify us.

Green rooftops have existed since ancient Mesopotamia with its famous "Hanging Gardens of Babylon" but it has never been so simple and fast to create green spaces or urban gardens on rooftops and today it is possible thanks to our Eco-pots, both floor and wall.

Eco-pots Verde ModularTM

The Eco-pots are designed and manufactured in Mexico with 100% recycled plastic, they have a carefully engineered design that has been tested and that allows creating spaces with vegetation on practically any concrete roof without damaging the surface where they are placed.

The wall mounted Eco-pots have their own water tank and a “cascade” irrigation mechanism, thus reducing the maintenance and irrigation of the plants, optimizing the consumption of water and energy. Each square meter of green wall can store approximately 2.86 gallons of water, making it the system with the largest water storage and self-irrigation capacity in the world.

The floor Eco-pots can store 6 liters of water in each eco-pot (36 liters per square meter), thus becoming the green roof system with the largest water storage (rain) and self-irrigation capacity in the world. The design and height of the Eco-pot "legs" allow air and water to flow under the eco-pots, thus avoiding the possible generation of humidity and without compromising the proper function of the roof's drainage. Also, thanks to the anti-corrosion drain system, when during a heavy rainstorm, prevents the overflow of the substrate.

REGISTRATION AND PATENTS

Our eco-pots are patented products.

Mexico: MX/u/2013/000117 / MX/u/2013/000143
USA: No 10,292,344,B2
Chile: No 02500-2016
Brazil: No BR 112016022603-8

Due to the effectiveness of our Eco-pots, we have been able to successfully participate in various projects certifying buildings with low environmental impact: certifications such as Leed, Well and PCES (CDMX).

Both the patents and the most important certifications in relation to the construction industry with low environmental impact and energy savings reflect the effectiveness and practicality of the Eco-pots being endorsed even by the University of Zürich, Switzerland.

Sustainability or corporate responsibility - Xochimilco -

In 2006, when the whole project began with the creation of green roofs, we participated in architectural projects where landscape design was required in unused spaces (walls and roofs). These designs required vegetation and the technical solution was our Eco-pots. Since then we have worked with producers from the ”Chinampera” area of Xochimilco (UNESCO Heritage 1987), with the aim of preserving the last vestige of the chinampa system, contributing to the economic reactivation of the area.
Through the creation of landscape design, we have created a value chain with the producers in the area, thus building an environmental and social responsibility where both parties have benefits.
Verde Modular™ was the pioneer companies that believed in and valued the important role that Xochimilco has in our city for the creation of green spaces. From 2006 to date, many companies and restaurants have joined this effort, collaborating with *chinampero producers.

SOME OF OUR CUSTOMERS

JOSÉ ANTONIO FLORES

The restless mind behind Verde ModularTM
"Green roofs ARE the future of cities and our Eco-pots the way to achieve it!"

Architect by profession, ecologist at heart. Since 2003, he carried out his first ecological project in his social service at the Universidad Iberoamericana “Rehabilitation of Parque México”, the only Art Deco-style Park in Mexico, which required restoration as it was semi-abandoned, with a lot of crime and without facilities. Thanks to the social service project, walkways, lighting, green areas, ponds, fountains were created and architectural elements such as its Forum, the Clock Tower and a new access plaza were recovered, achieving a comprehensive renovation that brought the area back to life, giving the “Countess” (a nick name given to the Park since it is in the La Condesa neighborhood of Mexico City a green lung that helped her recover her surplus value as one of the best neighborhoods in Mexico City.

The previous project was the reason why in 2006 the University of Ferrara in Italy awarded José Antonio a scholarship to pursue a master's degree in Sustainable Urban Design, where as a thesis project he created an environmental regeneration project for Mexico City entitled Efecto Verde™, where the cornerstone of the project was the creation of the “Ecomacetas” (Eco-Pots) to be able to create green spaces on practically any concrete surface, quickly and easily; but above all in a sustainable manner.

It was not enough for Arch. Jose Antonio Flores to “regreen” 40% of the urbanized surface of Mexico City, he wanted to push the project further so that this "green wave" would be capable of generating hundreds of thousands of square meters of green areas and thousands of jobs that could be replicated in any city and thus combat the phenomenon of "heat island" (when vast areas of concrete and asphalt heat up the cities creating notable heat footprints) present in every city and return to nature part of the surface that had been covered with asphalt and concrete.

In just 15 years since the creation of Efecto Verde™, José Antonio has managed to become a promoter of green roofs and vertical gardens through the Verde Modular™ brand with which he markets them. The success of his products meant that in 2018 the University of Netherland and the University of Ferrara invited him to participate in a colloquium at the European Parliament in Brussels to present his thesis project Efecto Verde™ that had turned from a theoretical case into a reality, channeling all his professional activity and his passion, to materialize the strategic plan of his thesis.

Some of the most representative projects in which green roofs have been installed with "Ecomacetas" (Eco-pots) are: Papalote Museo del Niño, LEED and WELL projects in corporations such as BBVA (Bank), HSBC (Bank), Banamex (Bank), Microsoft (Mexico City HQ), FibraUno, Torre Mayor, among others. Efecto Verde™, AC has given workshops about green roofs and urban gardens to more than 5,000 people and has carried out two temporary installations in the Mexico City’s **Zócalo (Main Square of Mexico City), as well as, on the main concourse square of the Monument to the Revolution (in Mexico City).

In 2017 and with the endorsement of the University of Zürick, Switzerland, and the UAM and UNAM of Mexico, José Antonio would make the modular systems part of the Greening Naturación standard of Mexico City, thus consolidating the "Ecomacetas" (Eco-pots) as the modular system for green roofs with the highest rainwater collection capacity (9.51 gallons / 10.75 square foot) and self-irrigation in the world.

His works and achievements accomplished so far have allowed José Antonio to reach the final phase of his strategic plan: massification and replication of green roofs and urban gardens in 2021 the marketing strategy that would allow the Eco-pots to be capitalized on and disseminated to the public.
